Reasons to Stop Smoking
Almost half a million people die every year from diseases caused by smoking. Lung cancer, in particular, claims more lives than any other form of cancer in both men and women. But lung cancer isn't the only health hazard that comes from smoking. Tobacco smokers face increased risk of heart attacks, respiratory disease and an overall weakened immune system. The American Cancer Society warns that smokers lose an average of 15 years from their life span compared to nonsmokers.

In the face of such alarming statistics, more and more people are kicking the habit. If they can do it, so can you.

The Advantages
Quitting smoking has an immediate payoff -- studies show that breathing is improved within days; esophageal and pancreatic cancer risks plummet; and the risk of heart disease is significantly lowered in just a year. Best of all, after 10 years, a former smoker's life expectancy is the same as that of someone who never smoked at all.

Tips to Help you Quit
Use diet and exercise to counteract the most common pitfall of quitting - weight gain.
It's easy to fall into the trap of substituting one habit for another. Snacking instead of smoking may help you phase out cigarettes, just be sure you're eating low-calorie snacks. Since nicotine causes the body to burn up to 10 percent more energy, you may notice your metabolism slowing down as you quit smoking. Exercise will counteract some weight gain, but it is advisable to consult a doctor before beginning an exercise program, as a history of smoking can make you more susceptible to heart disease.

Cut back on alcohol.
Drinking is often associated with smoking, and could put you in a situation where you might be tempted to smoke. It also a good idea to sit in the non-smoking section of restaurants to further avoid temptation.

Make a commitment to your health then give yourself a deadline.
Do everything you can to meet that deadline

Tell friends, family and coworkers that you are quitting.
Their support will go a long way in fighting the urge.

Talk to your doctor
If you need a little extra help talk to your doctor about over-the-counter and prescription therapies for quitting, such as nicotine patches, gum, oral inhalers and the antidepressant drug called Zyban.
